Lightness, precision and the pleasure of moving: Riding on air, Adrian Russi

Adrian Russi

About masterclass: Level: intermediate/advanced
How can you bring together precision with the pleasure to move while dancing CI? What are the ways to achieve in your body a state of lightness that has mobility/agility and stability at the same time? How can you organise your body and your imagination to give your weight in a smooth way not only to the floor and to other bodies but also to the air?

My fascination for CI starts ultimately when apparent contrasts come closer to each other or even join together. And as I found in the last years the prerequisites for this are: clear connections inside the body, to the floor and to the space, being calm and wide-awake in your mind and having the ability to move your body in a distinct way. As well as the curiosity that tempts you to widen the limits of the possibilities to expand the playground on every level.

In this workshop we will experiment with different movement principles to challenge our body and our range of perception. We will move solo and with partners to get a taste of riding on air and hopefully we will be looking forward to the next jam to explore this dance quality on our own.
About Adrian Russi: Adrian Russi is a CI-teacher, performer and body therapist, who has been involved in Contact Improvisation since 1992. After he studied New Dance at “bewegungs-art” in Freiburg/Germany he continued his education with many different teachers, among them Steve Paxton and Nancy Stark Smith who developed CI in the early seventies with a group of other movers.

Adrian Russi is teaching CI mainly in Switzerland and gets invited regularly to international festivals. In his teaching he is focusing on the technical aspects of CI (ease, precision and strength) as well as on matters of perception (sensation, connection of inner and outer space, of bottom and top) and a creativity coming from a distinct body-awareness. For him the pleasure to play, deep engagement in the dance, and respect for others are the basis for gaining the most possible in dancing CI.

As a performer he is working with different international artists and his performances are primarily based on free improvisation including dance, dance-theatre, voice and live music.
